As an intern and student at the Center for Advanced Defense Studies, I have spent some time researching freedom of the press and how internet media opens new avenues of communication between nations. Certainly the proliferation of internet media sources and the spread of satellite and internet technology to developing nations has the benefit of promoting freedom of speech, open discussion, and a circulation of new ideas and ideals.

In your article you discuss promoting freedom of the press in the United States in order that the United States may better lead by example in an era of globalized media. However, despite the benefits of internet media, there exists a danger in allowing media generated within one culture free of restraint, exposure to an infinite audience across cultures. Information is often decoded within cultures based on cultural codes and foundations of understanding.

For the promotion of freedom of speech in the media you propose training journalists overseas in quality reporting. Perhaps an investment in homegrown journalists and reporting can help to balance media imported from the United States with locally generated media that will result in a culturally appropriate news that promotes discussion and the exchange of ideas.
